Vigil upped in forest areas along India-Nepal border
LUCKNOW, May 23 -- Security has been intensified across the porous India-Nepal border spread over seven UP districts after intelligence inputs about a possible breach into Indian territory by around 35 Pakistan and Bangladesh nationals, taking advantage of the forest region along the international border, said officials of UP Police and Sashashtra Seema Bal (SSB).
They said around 9000 personnel have been deployed at border areas from Pilibhit to Maharajganj. The Indo-Nepal border is spread across five districts in the eastern region, including Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Siddharth Nagar and Maharajganj as well as two districts of Terai region, including Pilibhit and Lakhimpur Kheri.
The alert is about the possible breach of Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals in the garb of locals using non-conventional routes through forest areas. Around 100 km stretch at the border in Bahraich district is dense forest, where combing has been intensified, officials informed.
An SSB official said over 1700 personnel have been specifically deployed for combing in the forest region while multiple watch towers have been set up to keep vigil during night hours. He said all SSB outposts have been asked to check every visitor crossing over the international border.
Talking to media, Commandant of 42nd Battalion of SSB, Ganga Singh Udawat said combing has been intensified in the forest area spread along the Bahraich border.
"The situation between India and Pakistan is tense. Therefore, SSB personnel have been asked to remain alert 24/7 to counter any possible breach," he said.
A police official in Maharajganj confirmed that the surveillance has been intensified using drones, CCTV cameras, metal detectors and special dog squads. Multiple watch towers have been set up for regular monitoring. According to officials, police teams are using drones to keep a check on unconventional routes and suspicious movement of people.
