LUCKNOW, Aug. 9 -- The Academic Council of Lucknow University on Friday approved the PhD Ordinance 2025, aligning it with the University Grants Commission's 2022 norms on awarding doctoral degrees. The new rules replace the 2024 ordinance that had allowed graduate-level teachers to supervise research scholars, prompting protests from the Lucknow University Associated Colleges Teachers' Association (LUACTA). The council's decision was made during a meeting at Malviya Hall, chaired by Prof. Manuka Khanna, the officiating vice chancellor. The council cleared the minutes of faculty council meetings across various university faculties. It also decided to give a final chance to research scholars whose thesis submission deadline had expired, granting them up to three months' extension. The D.Litt., D.Sc., and L.L.B. ordinances were also approved, along with the inclusion of Environmental Education as a course at the graduate level. Lucknow University Associated Colleges Teachers' Association members on Friday alleged that the PhD Ordinance 2025 deprives graduate-level teachers of the right to supervise research, a provision available under last year's rules. They said a meeting with the officiating vice chancellor failed to resolve the issue.
