Varanasi, Aug. 8 -- A group of traders from Varanasi on Thursday resolved to promote the use of Swadeshi (indigenous) products in protest against the 50% tariff imposed on India by U.S. President Donald Trump. Traders affiliated with various Vyapar Mandals, including Kshetriya Vyapar Mandal, Varuna Vyapar Mandal, Varanasi Furniture and Furnishing Vyapar Mandal, and Vande Mataram Vyapar Mandal, convened a meeting and unanimously decided to oppose what they called an unfair trade policy by the United States. Somnath Vishwakarma, general secretary of Varuna Kshetra Vyapar Mandal, stated, "The time has come to end our dependence on foreign companies. By appealing to the public to adopt Swadeshi, we will raise awareness through posters and stickers at our establishments." Ajay Gupta, president of the Varanasi Furniture and Furnishing Vyapar Mandal, added, "India will no longer bow down. We are ready to give a strong reply, no matter who the opponent is." Invoking the spirit of the August Revolution of August 9, 1942, Vishwakarma declared, "We, the traders, pledge to support indigenous goods, boycott foreign companies, and honor India's hardworking artisans and entrepreneurs."The traders further appealed to the public, saying, "When we go to the market, we will choose indigenous products. We will compel foreign companies to leave India."
