VARANASI, Aug. 21 -- Following confirmation of avian influenza (bird flu) at a poultry farm in Rampur district, Uttar Pradesh, Dr RS Rajput, chief veterinary officer of Varanasi, said that animal husbandry department teams are actively collecting swab and serum samples from poultry across Varanasi. These are being sent for laboratory testing as a precaution. He assured poultry farmers that there is no need to panic, as all necessary safety measures are in place. On Wednesday, district magistrate Satyendra Kumar convened a meeting with animal husbandry officials to emphasise and strengthen precautionary actions.Dr Rajput urged all poultry farmers in Varanasi to remain vigilant but calm. The animal husbandry department is conducting regular and thorough inspections of poultry farms, collecting samples for ongoing testing, which is a standard preventive process.Farmers have been advised to watch for symptoms of bird flu in their flocks, including: Sudden deaths of many chickens; lethargy and reduced activity; blue discoloration of beaks and feet; respiratory distress such as coughing, sneezing, or difficulty breathing; decreased egg production; swelling or wounds on the body; and discharge from eyes or nose If any of these signs are noticed, farmers are asked to take precautions including maintain strict cleanliness and hygiene in the poultry farm; spray disinfectants regularly; limit entry of outsiders and apply lime powder at farm entrances to disinfect footwear; quarantine new birds separately for at least two weeks; prevent wild birds from entering the farm; keep feeding and drinking utensils clean and provide fresh water; use personal protective equipment like masks and gloves; and frequently sanitise hands and avoid touching the face without washing hands thoroughly after handling poultry.Farmers are urged to immediately report any unusual deaths or symptoms to the animal husbandry department and avoid direct contact with sick or dead birds....
