Varanasi man arrested for throwing sons into Ganga
VARANASI, Aug. 7 -- A man accused of throwing his two young sons into the Ganga river on Monday was arrested, police said.
The accused, Durga Sonkar, a resident of Varanasi, jumped into the river along with his two sons from the Ring Road-3 bridge near Babhanpura. While Durga was rescued, his sons -Shubham alias Sandeep, 7, and Ashish Sonkar, 5 -were swept away and remain missing.
Following his rescue, Durga reportedly told police that he had a dispute with his wife over her refusal to give him money to repay a loan taken from a self-help group in Chandpur, under the Chaubepur police station limits.
Search operations continued into Tuesday, but both children remained untraced. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local divers, led by village head Sanjay Sonkar, scoured the river from Babhanpura to Mustafabad and Balua Ghat.
Based on a complaint lodged by Durga's wife, Manju Devi, police registered a case against him for endangering and causing the disappearance of his sons.
Inspector Ajit Kumar Verma of Chaubepur police station said Durga had demanded money from his wife to repay the loan.
The couple argued over what Manju described as his "unnecessary expenses." Upset over the dispute, Durga reportedly took both sons on his bike to the Babhanpura bridge and threw them into the river before jumping in himself....
