Varanasi court denies bail to ex-IPS officer Amitabh Thakur
VARANASI, Dec. 23 -- Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, accused of defaming a local resident through social media, will remain in custody after a Varanasi court rejected his bail application on Monday.
Special Chief Judicial Magistrate Krishna Kumar turned down Amitabh Thakur's bail plea, which was filed on Saturday, public prosecutor Madhusudan Tiwari said.
During the hearing, Tiwari told the court that 10 cases are registered against Thakur at various police stations. He contended that granting bail would be inappropriate as Thakur could tamper with evidence.
The prosecutor submitted a list of the 10 cases while opposing the bail plea. Defence lawyer Anuj Yadav, representing Thakur, contended that the cases were fabricated and politically motivated. After hearing both sides, the court dismissed the bail application.
The case originated from a complaint by Varanasi resident Ambrish Singh Bhola, an office-bearer of Hindu Yuva Vahini, who alleged that Thakur posted a social media video accusing him of criminal activities. Bhola claimed the video damaged his reputation....
