Uttarakhand: New parking areas on anvil ahead of Char Dham
Dehradun, March 15 -- The state government has intensified preparations to streamline traffic management along the route of the annual Char Dham Yatra, officials said on Saturday, adding that they were ordered to identify congestion-prone locations and develop additional parking facilities.
Acting on the directions of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, officials have begun field inspections and accelerated work on several parking projects in Chamoli district.
Housing secretary Dr R Rajesh Kumar conducted on-site inspections of ongoing and proposed parking facilities in Gauchar, Karnaprayag and Chamoli on Saturday to review arrangements and monitor construction progress. During the visit, he held a review meeting with officials from the concerned departments and directed them to ensure that all projects are completed within the stipulated deadlines.
Officials said the state government has prioritised providing hassle-free traffic facilities to both pilgrims and local residents during the yatra, which draws thousands of devotees to the state every year.
During the inspection, officials informed the secretary that construction of a parking facility in Gauchar has already been completed. The facility, has a capacity of 27 vehicles. Kumar directed officials to make the parking operational at the earliest so that it can benefit both local residents and travellers.
He later inspected a parking project under construction in Karnaprayag, being developed by the District Level Development Authority, Chamoli. Kumar instructed officials to expedite the pace of work and ensure the project is completed before the upcoming Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, noting that large numbers of devotees visit the area during the pilgrimage period.
In Chamoli town, Kumar also inspected two proposed parking sites -one near the taxi stand and another on the khadd (ravine) side. Officials said the parking facility near the taxi stand will accommodate 21 vehicles, while the site near the khadd will have capacity for 82 vehicles. Both projects are being executed by the Rural Works Department.
Kumar directed officials to complete construction of these facilities on priority so they can be made operational before the Char Dham Yatra begins....
