Uttarakhand : Heavy rain triggers landslides; orange alert issued
Mussoorie, June 23 -- Overnight rainfall since Saturday till Sunday triggered landslides along key pilgrimage routes that led to disruption of Char Dham Yatra, particularly on the Kedarnath and Badrinath routes, for brief period, according to officials familiar with the matter. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued an orange alert for several districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall between June 23 and 26.
"On the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund-Kedarnath highway, a landslide took place at Munkatiya on late Saturday night, blocking vehicular traffic and forcing pilgrims to walk an additional six kilometres. Authorities quickly deployed heavy machinery to the site, and the road was initially made passable for pedestrians. Within an hour, debris was cleared, and vehicle movement resumed. The yatra to Kedarnath is now proceeding smoothly," said Veereshwar Tomar, Rudraprayag district information officer .
However, Guptkashi police circle officer Vikas Pundir urged pilgrims heading to Kedarnath to plan their journeys based on updated weather forecasts and strictly follow police advisories.
Meanwhile, rising water levels in the Alaknanda river have led police authorities to advise devotees to stay away from riverbanks as a precautionary measure.
In Champawat district, a 22-year-old motorcyclist, Tasleem from Khatima, was swept away while attempting to cross the rain-swollen Kirora nullah on the Tanakpur-Purnagiri road. "He was rescued by a team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police. During the same rescue operation, officials also found a mentally unstable man trapped nearby, who was safely brought to shelter by the team," said Devendra Patwal, Champawat district disaster management officer.
