Dehradun, June 28 -- Vehicles entering Mussoorie on weekends are three to four times over the town's parking capacity, said Uttarakhand police on Friday, days after a Delhi man died due to delayed medical attention caused by traffic congestion.
Kamal Kishore Tandon (62) suffered a suspected heart attack, but his family was unable to access timely medical help due to severe traffic congestion on June 5. Despite police efforts, it took the family over an hour to reach around 4 km to the health centre in Landour.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ajai Singh said during the peak tourist season, there is a significant influx of tourists at popular destinations in Dehradun, especially in Mussoorie.
"An analysis of recent visitor data revealed that while approximately 8,000 vehicles enter Mussoorie on regular days, this number exceeds 15,000 on weekends. At present, there are around 414 hotels and homestays operating in Mussoorie, collectively offering parking space for approximately 4,590 vehicles. The number of incoming vehicles during weekends is nearly three to four times the available parking capacity," he said.
He said to prevent traffic jams and inconvenience to the public in Mussoorie on weekends, the police have implemented a comprehensive traffic and crowd management plan. Singh appealed tourists to cooperate with the police to ensure smooth flow of traffic by complying with the plan.
An additional police force has been deployed on main roads, parking places and crowded places to deal with the police, he said.
Hotels have been directed to stagger check-in and check-out timings by at least 3 hours to ease vehicle movement....
