Uttarakhand: Two elephant calves to be sent to Corbett
Haldwani, Oct. 5 -- The Uttarakhand forest department has decided to relocate two elephant calves found at separate locations in the Corbett landscape forests to Corbett National Park, forest officials said, adding a letter has been written to the Chief Wildlife Warden, and both elephants will be moved as soon as permission is received.
Terai Central Forest Division sub-divisional officer Shashidev said, "On January 17, 2025, a three-month-old elephant calf was found injured near the Haripura Reservoir in Udham Singh Nagar district. The forest team brought the calf to Sanjay Van and treated it. Forest personnel later named the calf Raja."

Forest personnel attempted to reunite the calf with the herd, but the elephants refused to let it join. Following this, the forest team also brought the calf to Sanjay Van and named it Rustam.

However, as soon as they are taken out of the enclosure, they run away into the forest, making their upkeep and care difficult," she said.
SDO Shashidev further said, "Corbett National Park is a suitable habitat for these elephants. Several elephants are being trained by mahouts in the Dhikala Range of the Central Wildlife Warden. They will also be empl- oyed there, ensuring their good care. A letter has been written to the Chief Wildlife Warden in this regard. The elephants will be relocated as soon as permission is obtained."
