Uttar Pradesh lose to Karnataka as key batters falter
LUCKNOW, Oct. 30 -- While skipper Sameer Rizvi has not had much luck with red-ball cricket, keeper-batter Akshay Dubey has not been in form in any format of the game.
Poor show by both batters cost Uttar Pradesh their second match in the Under-23 Col CK Nayaudu Trophy in Meerut on Wednesday. The team lost to Karnataka by 75 runs in an Elite Group D encounter despite being in a commanding position.
Rizvi, who has scored almost 500 runs in the two consecutive seasons of the UPT20 League, has scored just 54 runs in four innings of the Nayudu Trophy. His best, so far, is 34 in the first innings against Karnataka before scoring just 13 in the second innings on Wednesday.
Rizvi, who was bought by Chennai Super Kings in the 2024 season of the IPL, scored just two and three in the first match against Himachal Pradesh. The former champions won that game with ease. In nine first-class matches so far, he has scored a meagre 152 runs at an average of 11.69.
Meanwhile, Dubey, who was benched in the first season of the UPT20 League in 2023, remained a big failure in 2024 and 2025, too, when he played for Meerut Mavericks, which is owned by his father. But the Praveen Kumar-led selection panel "found him suitable" for the U-23 side, where he has been exposed by his batting figures of 9, 8, 13 and 12 in four innings.
In fact, both Rizvi and Dubey were expected to shine on Wednesday as Uttar Pradesh needed 177 runs with seven wickets in hand to notch up their second win this season, but both failed to do so as Rizvi scored 13 and Dubey made just 12.
Uttar Pradesh, which conceded a 20-run first innings lead, began the day at 92/3 at the Victoria Park Ground with Adarsh Singh and Shubham Mishra on the crease on Wednesday. After adding 39 runs for the fourth wicket, Mishra (10, 69b) was bowled by Shashi Kumar K.
Mishra's wicket didn't put much pressure on the side with Adarsh hitting the ball all around the park. Rizvi's departure when the total was 145 in 56.2 overs, however, put Uttar Pradesh on the back foot. Rizvi was caught by Samit Dravid off Dhruv Prabhakar after scoring just 13 in 18 balls with the help of one boundary and a six.
Uttar Pradesh could add just one more run to the total before Singh was trapped leg before wicket by Prabhakar when he was at 62 from 174 balls. He hit four boundaries and a six.
Mohd Amaan (22, 37b, 2x6) then tried to avoid the inevitable, but to no avail, as Akshay Dubey (12), Kartik Yadav (0), Vijay Kumar (2) and Naman Tiwari (3*) couldn't add much to the score. The innings came to an end in 69 overs.
Full marks should be given to Karnataka bowlers, including Dhruv Prabhakar (3/47), Hardik Raj (3/36), Shashi Kumar (2/57), who bowled superbly to help their team notch up their second consecutive win this season to go on top of the group with 23 points.
Uttar Pradesh, with 16 points in two matches, will take on Railways in their next match, starting November 2, in Greater Noida....
