Uttar Pradesh athletes win four medals in Khelo India Youth Games
LUCKNOW, May 7 -- Uttar Pradesh athletes continued to make their presence felt at the Khelo India Youth Games Bihar even on Tuesday, winning one silver and three bronze medals in judo at Patna.
Prince won the silver medal in boys 73 kg category, whereas Utkrish won a bronze medal in the boys 55 kg category. Lagan Laskar (57 kg) and Shagun (44 kg) bagged bronze medals in the girls category.
Favourites Pawan Batham won the World Laughter Day Chess Tournament, scoring six points in the seven-round event, which was hosted by Chess Club Black and White here on Tuesday. Octogenarian RK Gupta (5.5 pts) from Jhansi had been leading throughout the tournament but lost the last round to talented teenager Lakshya Nigam and had to settle for second place. Gupta also drew with Pawan. Lakshya took the third spot (5.5 pts). Himanshu Mishra (5 pts), Kunwar Prashant Singh (4 pts) and Sarthak Pandey (4 pts) won the top three unrated section prizes. Seasoned coach Sayeed and KK Khare tied for first place in the senior citizens' section with 4.5 points each. Irfan was second with 4 points. Uzair, UB Singh and KK Kesharwani tied for third place with 3 points each. Hrothbertina Hilton, one of the strongest women players in Lucknow, performed above expectation to take the best woman prize (3 pts). Aabhas Kumar Srivastava was best in the under-16 category (4.5 pts), while Daksh Arora won the under-16 unrated section.
The 1st District Ranking Table Tennis Tournament under the auspices of Lucknow District Table Tennis Association, will be held at UPTTA Complex here on May 23 and 24. Events will be conducted for men/women, youth boys /girls under 19, youth boys/ girls under 17, sub-jr. boy's/girl's under 15 years, cadet boys/girls under 13 years, and Hopes boys / girls Under 11 years. Selected players will represent Lucknow in the forthcoming State Ranking and State Table Tennis Championships. The last date of entry is May 17.
Munindra Maurya bowled a fine spell to fashion Sound Image Cricket Club's seven wickets win over Triumph Cricket Academy in a league match of the Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Memorial T20 Tournament, at the GCRG Ground here on Tuesday. Maurya took 3/20 as TCA could make 143/7 while batting first after winning the toss. Opener Shaurya Singh top scored with 51, which came off 49 balls with the help of seven hits to the fence. In reply, SICC romped home in 16.4 overs, losing just three wickets. Faiz (37, 23b, 6x4, 1x6) and Sharwan Jaiswal (22, 25b, 3x4) stitched together 51 runs for the opening wicket. Thereafter, Almas Shaukat struck 24-ball 40 with the help of one boundary and four sixes to help the side reach home. Abhishek Yadav (19) and Sudhanshu Chaurasiya (12) remained unbeaten.
The Uttar Pradesh Fencing Association on Tuesday announced that it will raise the activities of the discipline at the school level with the support of Khelo India scheme. Newly elected president, Jatin Verma on the occasion donated two machines for the fencers and said that more efforts would be made for the popularity of the sport in every district of the state.
