UPCA calls for BCCI inquiry as not a ball bowled in 4 days
LUCKNOW, Nov. 6 -- Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association's Green Park Stadium in Kanpur has always been the centre of criticism for its "poor drainage system", but probably for the first time, UPCA got a taste of its own medicine in Vadodara where not even a single ball could be bowled during the four-day Elite Group A encounter between Uttar Pradesh and hosts Baroda despite excellent weather conditions.
It had rained on the eve of the start of the four-day encounter but stopped in the night. However, the authorities concerned couldn't get the ground ready for the match and no action was possible on all four days at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, thus forcing the two teams to split points.
The Baroda Cricket Association not being able to get the ground ready for an important encounter has left the UPCA bosses frustrated. "It's really frustrating. We have already lodged our complaint with the Board of Control for Cricket in India and have asked for a thorough enquiry so that such incidents don't happen again," UPCA's newly elected secretary, Prem Manohar Gupta, said on Wednesday, a day after the match. "It was sunny on all four days of the match. The BCA couldn't maintain the ground there and both the teams, especially UPCA had to lose an important opportunity for no reason," said Gupta, adding, "Look at the UPCA, even in odd conditions in the recent past, we managed to conduct the India-Bangladesh Test and even the match between India A and Australia A recently."
"We managed it after the bad condition of the ground. Our groundsman and staff, all of us worked hard and prepared the ground in the morning. It's a complete failure on the part of the BCA and I request the BCCI to take some action against the people concerned," he added.
Gupta said that even in the same conditions Baroda's Under-23 match was played on the adjacent B Ground at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi without any interruption. It's not important who could have won that match, if it happened," he further said.
"There used to be an old stadium in Baroda, where work used to be done. On being enquired, they said that there were no covers of full grounds there before. There were only covers of run-up patch grounds. After that, they covered the entire ground but could not manage it even after that," he further said. "So, it seems like there is mismanagement there. In today's time, all the grounds are made and maintained with tech support. I don't know what ground they have made. The stadium is completely new," he added.
However, general manager of Cricket Operations at the BCCI, Abey Kuruvilla confirmed that the issue has already been in the knowledge of the BCCI and they were trying to find out what went wrong in the match, but he can't tell anything beyond this at this moment. "Yes, we are aware about this and trying to find out the facts, but being an employee of the BCCI, I am not authorised to say anything more about it at this moment," he said on Wednesday.
In 2017, in a similar situation at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, the opening match of the Duleep Trophy between India Blue and India Green was abandoned on Day Three. Then UP's own Suresh Raina was leading India Blue in the event.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh will miss the services of Vipraj Nigam for the next two Ranji Trophy matches as the cricketer from Barabanki was on Wednesday picked for India A to play a three-match one day series against South Africa A, scheduled to be played between November 6 to 19 at Rajkot.
Besides Barabanki's Nigam, who has so far taken six wickets in two matches, batter Rinku Singh, who is currently in Australia with Team India for the ongoing T20Is series, will also be missing UP's fourth match against Nagaland (November 8-11), but he is expected to be available for the match against Tamil Nadu, starting November 16 at Coimbatore....
