UP women win silver, men bronze in Fed cup handball
LUCKNOW, May 26 -- Uttar Pradesh women's team on Sunday created history by winning the silver medal for the first time in the 36th Federation Cup Handball Championship, at the Veer Bahadur Singh Sports College in Gorakhpur. Uttar Pradesh men won the bronze medal.
In the women's category final, Uttar Pradesh had to face defeat at the hands of Indian Railways by 16-14. UP girls gave a tough fight but failed to overpower Railways. In this exciting match, both the teams were tied at 9-9.
However, after a change in the ends, Railways team showed better coordination and won the trophy with a lead of two goals. Nikki scored five goals. Asha scored four while Sushma and Priyanka shared four goals between them. For Uttar Pradesh, Khushboo scored five goals, whereas Mona netted three goals.
Earlier, in the men's section semi-final, Uttar Pradesh went down fighting to CISF 18-25. CISF were leading by 16-11 at the half-time. Aamir struck the highest 13 goals for the winners, whereas Vikrant from Uttar Pradesh scored seven goals.
Handball association of India's director, Anandeshwar Pandey on the occasion congratulated both men and women teams of Uttar pradesh for their brilliant show in the event.
"All the teams of Uttar pradesh have done well this season in almost all the domestic championships and it shows the rising impact of state players at the national level," said Pandey, who also happens to be the secretary of the UP Handball....
