LUCKNOW, Aug. 13 -- Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday won their maiden medal, a bronze, at the 15th Hockey India Junior Women's National Championship 2025, defeating Chhattisgarh 2-0 Kakinda in Andhra Pradesh. Only last week, Uttar Pradesh men also won a bronze medal at the nationals. In fact, the win on Tuesday was a result of years of hard work, sweat and passion, and everyone is happy to have their first medal since the inception of Hockey India in 2009. On Tuesday in the hard-line encounter, Uttar Pradesh forged into the lead in the 10th minute through skipper Sunita Kumari, who made no mistake in converting the team's first penalty corner into goal (1-0). But thereafter, it was a long wait for Uttar Pradesh to score their second goal as Chhattisgarh women put up some fine show in defence. They also failed to score the levelor. However, Manisha Patel's field goal almost at the time of hooter, helped Uttar Pradesh complete the rout (2-0). Defender Madhu Yadav, who showed her might in defence, stole the limelight with her strong performance in the match and was later named as the Player of the Match. This achievement is also the result of the hard work of the team, the strategy of the coaching staff, and the support of the entire state. "Certainly, it's a big achievement of our women at the nationals as we all were waiting for this to happen for the last 15 years," Uttar Pradesh Hockey's chief, RP Singh said while reacting over the win. Uttar Pradesh Hockey's secretary and former Indian hockey captain, Rajneesh Mishra too expressed his happiness over the team's podium finish on Tuesday. "The win is not only a big boost to the women's hockey in Uttar Pradesh, but it will have a significant impact on other age categories teams," he said. Tektro Lucknow Reserve defeated Yuva Club 5-0 in a super league match of the District Football League-2025, at the Ekana International Football Stadium here on Tuesday. Abhishek, Thangamnalun, Nikhil, Arnab and Neeraj scored a goal each. In the second match of the day, Ex Student Men's United Club defeated hosts Lucknow Falcon Club by a solitary goal. Mukesh scored the only goal in the very third minute of play. Mantford College defeated Sarvangin Vikas Inter College 1-0 in a match of the 21st Avinash Chaturvedi Inter School Football Tournament, at the Chowk Stadium here on Wednesday.
