UP women bag silver in handball
LUCKNOW, Dec. 11 -- Hosts Uttar Pradesh women finished runners-up in the 37th Federation Cup Handball Championship on Wednesday, losing to Himachal Pradesh 19-33 despite having local support, at the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Multipurpose Hall at the KD Singh Babu Stadium here. Punjab defeated Rajasthan 32-23 to win the men's team title.
In the women's final, the hosts girls displayed considerable agility, but Himachal Pradesh's players, relying on their experience and coordination, applied pressure and established a strong 18-9 lead by halftime.
After a change in the ends, Himachal's players adopted an aggressive approach, and even then Uttar Pradesh's tried to stage a comeback, but missed crucial opportunities which proved costly. Shivani from Himachal Pradesh top scored with eight goals.
Shalini, Bhavna, Gulshan, and Kritika scored three goals each, while Priyanka, Jagriti, Vanshika, and Shiksha each scored two goals. Mithali, Ridhima, Kanishka, Garima, and Payal added one goal each. For Uttar Pradesh, Reshma scored eight goals, while Rajpati and Khushboo scored four goals each. Naina, Preeti, and Suman added one goal each.
In the men's final, both teams were aggressive from the very start and Punjab managed a slender 13-11 lead at the halftime. In the second half, Punjab's players responded to their opponents' attacks with excellent coordination, tightening their grip on the match and winning the trophy by a nine-goal margin....
