Prayagraj, Aug. 9 -- A man wanted in several serious crimes, including a recent shooting in Pratapgarh, has been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police's Special Task Force (STF) from Mumbai. The accused, Shahreyar, who carried a bounty of Rs.50,000 on his head, was caught on Thursday from a residential building near Ashrafiya Mosque in Kurla East. The STF confirmed the arrest on Friday. Police said Shahreyar was involved in an armed attack on June 16, in Karela Bazaar, Pratapgarh where seven to eight men had arrived in two vehicles and opened fire on two men-Eklakh Ahmed ,32, and Nawab Ali ,40,-who were sitting at a tea stall. Both victims, from Pure Devjani village, sustained injuries. During their escape, the gang rammed a police checkpoint near the Karela outpost and kept firing. Two more people, Arpit Patel ,16, of Bhivni village and Mohammad Sohail ,22, of Taguri village, were injured. The police outpost was only 100 metres from the scene, but officers could not stop the attackers. After the incident, several police officials were suspended by the Pratapgarh SP. Those suspended included the outpost in-charge Om Prakash Singh, sub-inspector Virendra Pratap Singh, constables Pradeep Maurya and Dharmendra Yadav, and Patti Kotwali SHO Aditya Singh. Following a tip-off, an STF team led by sub-inspector Rahul Parmar raided a chawl in Kurla East around 11am on Thursday and arrested Shahreyar. During questioning, Shahreyar admitted his role in many serious crimes. In 2018, he and another man attacked a home guard and stole his rifle. In 2019, he helped rob Rs.1.5 lakh from a Jan Seva Kendra in Pratapgarh. In 2024, he was part of a Rs.4.65 lakh petrol pump robbery in Vadodara, Gujarat.In 2025, he was also involved in robbing a young boy in the Dehlupur area of Pratapgarh. Police said the June 2025 attack was linked to a personal feud. Shahreyar's associate, Mahfooz, had a dispute with Nawab Ali. After Nawab allegedly threatened Mahfooz over the phone, Shahreyar and his group carried out the violent attack. A case was filed at Patti Kotwali Police Station....
