UP ride high on Mavi, Juyal, Kaushik tons; Nagaland 77/4
LUCKNOW, Nov. 10 -- Exactly after seven years since making his debut for Uttar Pradesh in Ranji Trophy, all-rounder Shivam Mavi on Sunday hit his maiden first-class century against a lowly Nagaland on the second day of their Elite Group A encounter at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
Noida's Mavi, who took seven wickets in six T20s for Team India after making his debut in 2023, made full use of the placid turf of the Green Park Stadium to score 87-ball 101 with the help of 10 boundaries and five sixes. He was unstoppable and remained unbeaten as Uttar Pradesh declared their first innings at 535/6.
This wasn't all for Mavi, 26, as he came up with all guns blazing with his deliveries, bagging 2/17 to leave Nagaland struggling at 77/4 in 26 overs in their first innings. Fellow pacer Aaquib Khan removed opener Nzanthung Mozgui (2) caught by keeper Aryan Juyal and then Mavi castled Sedezhali Rupero (15) with his perfect inswinger.
Mavi also took the wicket of Hem Chetri (8), caught by Juyal and just before the end of first day's play left-arm spinner Shivam Sharma uprooted the off stump of keeper-batter Chetan Bist (7). At stumps, prolific opener Dega Nishal (42, 69b, 6x4) and skipper Rongsen Jonathan (0) were at the crease.
Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 301/1, Uttar Pradesh batters Madhav Kaushik and Aryan Juyal took the score to 332 before Juyal was caught by More off Lmliwati Lemtur after hitting his season's first hundred as his 205-ball 140 was studded with 18 hits to the fence.
Juyal, who had a similar century (138) against Madhya Pradesh this January in a first-class game as skipper, has already proved his prowess with the willow, scoring an unbeaten 60 for Central Zone in Duleep Trophy and another half-century (66) against Andhra in season opener at the same venue last month. It was his eighth first-class hundred on Sunday.
Delhi-boy Kaushik, who has already scored back-to-back half centuries against Andhra and Odisha this season, also remained one of the stars for Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, hitting his career-best an unbeaten 185, which came off 374 balls with the help of 11 boundaries. It was also Kaushik's fourth century in 25 first-class matches.
There was a rush of wickets after Juyal departed as skipper and Delhi-boy Karan Sharma was caught by More off Jonathan after scoring 17 in 46 balls with the help of just one boundary, whereas Prashant Veer made just one. Former India skipper at the Under-19 World Cup and former UP captain Priyam Garg (4) failed again. Meerut-boy Garg had his last half-century in a T20 game against Delhi in December 2024 and since then he has been struggling, scoring 18 and 31 in previous two matches. Off spinner Rongsen Jonathan turned out to be the most successful bowler for Nagaland, bagging 4/150, whereas Imliwati Lemtur took 2/93....
