UP reels under sudden rain spell, orange alert issued in 20 districts
LUCKNOW, May 5 -- Large parts of Uttar Pradesh were hit by unseasonal rain, thunderstorms and strong winds on Monday, disrupting normal life across several districts, with the state capital also witnessing a sharp spell of rain and a steep drop in temperature.
Across Uttar Pradesh, the state received 6.8 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours against a normal of 0.5 mm. Gunnaur in Sambhal recorded the highest rainfall at 130 mm, followed by Sahawar in Kasganj at 97 mm, Bareilly at 54.6 mm, Palliakalan in Kheri at 49.2 mm, Gorakhpur at 41.4 mm and Kannauj at 24.5 mm.
Lucknow recorded 14.8 mm rainfall within an hour as overcast skies, thunderstorm activity and reduced visibility swept through the city. The maximum temperature in the state capital fell to 29 degrees Celsius, 10.4 notches below normal, marking the lowest daytime temperature for May in the last four years. The minimum temperature stood at 24 degrees Celsius.
Similar weather conditions were earlier observed in Lucknow on February 3 this year. The forecast for Tuesday suggests partly cloudy skies with thundery development and one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 31 degrees Celsius and 21 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Barabanki reported the lowest daytime temperature in the state, with the maximum at 26.5 degrees Celsius, 12.1 notches below normal, along with 53 mm rainfall.
The weather office has indicated that thunderstorms and hailstorm activity may continue till Tuesday before gradually weakening. Maximum temperatures are expected to drop by 4-6 degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual rise thereafter.
An orange alert has been issued for more than 20 districts, including Banda, Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Ballia, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya and Ambedkar Nagar, with warnings of thunderstorms, hail and winds reaching 50-60 kmph gusting up to 70 kmph.
In addition, gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 k mph, are likely in districts including Gonda, Bahraich, Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Unnao, Mathura, Agra, Etawah, Jalaun, Jhansi and Lalitpur....
