UP pushes scientific strategy to halve road accidents
Lucknow, Nov. 20 -- The Uttar Pradesh traffic directorate completed a three-day road accident investigation workshop at the police headquarters in Lucknow on Wednesday. The training, held from November 17 to 19, was organised with the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) and the College of Traffic Management & Forensic Science, Faridabad. Officers from 20 Zero Fatality Districts (ZFD) took part.
IRTE experts trained officers in traffic engineering, legal provisions, accident analysis and forensic evidence collection. At the closing session, DGP Rajeev Krishna said the state is using a scientific, multi-dimensional plan to improve road safety and reduce accidents. He highlighted three pilot corridors-Aligarh-Bulandshahr Road, Unnao-Kanpur corridor and Kanpur-Hamirpur route-where focused work cut fatal accidents by 41% to 70% in two to three months, without extra resources. The DGP said this shows how clear strategy and responsibility can save lives. He added that a recent national analysis by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways supports the UP model.
Guidelines and action plans have been prepared for the 20 ZFDs, with shared responsibility and outcome-based assessments.
The DGP told officers to achieve at least a 50% reduction in accidents, saying that saving lives would be equal to a "lifetime achievement."
