UP Police workshop focuses on legal enforcement
Lucknow, April 30 -- The Uttar Pradesh Police Training Directorate on Wednesday organised a day-long workshop on animal protection, focussed on strengthening legal enforcement and improving investigative responses in cases of animal cruelty and illegal activities.
The workshop, inaugurated by director general (training) Rajeev Sabharwal, brought together 44 gazetted officers and senior prosecution officials for an intensive legal and operational orientation. The initiative is expected to enhance coordination between police and prosecution wings while promoting a more structured, sensitive, and law-compliant approach to animal protection.
Officials said the workshop aimed to bridge the gap between legal provisions and their practical application, equipping field officers with both the knowledge of the law and the procedural clarity required for effective enforcement.
A central component of the programme was a detailed examination of the legal architecture governing animal protection. Subject experts provided in-depth insights into major statutes, including the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955, and the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The sessions moved beyond statutory provisions to address ground-level enforcement challenges. Discussions covered regulatory frameworks related to animal transport, trade practices, and slaughterhouse operations-areas often linked to violations but marked by complex compliance requirements.
Experts also guided participants on investigation techniques, evidence collection, and case-building strategies for offences involving animal cruelty, illegal transport, and unlawful trade.
