UP look for season'sfirst win in Ranji Trophy
LUCKNOW, Nov. 8 -- Hosts and former champions Uttar Pradesh would be aiming for a fresh start even after playing three matches this season in the prestigious Ranji Trophy when they take on Nagaland in their four-day Elite Group B encounter, starting Saturday, at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
Uttar Pradesh have seven points in three matches so far with one against Baroda being washed out completely, whereas Nagaland are languishing at the bottom of the table with just one point. Uttar Pradesh will also be aiming for their maiden win this season as even after playing first two games on the home turf, they couldn't register a win even after enjoying domination in the second match of the season against Odisha.
Only last week, Uttar Pradesh suffered their biggest blow on their progress when their match against hosts Baroda was washed out due to an alleged negligence of the authorities concerned who failed to make the conditions suitable for play even though there was no rain for all four days.
"Splitting point at this stage means you are pushed back and now you have to start afresh as now we need to win matches or take lead in the remaining four matches of the season to stay a float for a berth in the knockout," a team official said on Friday, preferring anonymity.
He, however, refused to bring in a new face in the side in place for most successful bowling all-rounder for the side so far, Vipraj Nigam, who has been picked in India A to play three-match one day series against South Africa at Rajkot.
Left-arm spinner Shivam Sharma has taken four wickets in three matches whereas other slow left-arm orthodox spinner Prashant Veer has two wickets in one match. Young leg spinner Zeeshan Ansari, who has been in fine form, but has been picked up as a net bowler, also has a chance to make it to the Playing XI on Saturday.
If one compares the two sides in the match, Uttar Pradesh are far ahead of the rivals both in terms of batting and bowling, but given the recent performances in the first three matches of the season, Rongsen Jonathan-led Nagaland have the ability to surprise the rivals in their own den as they have been a balanced side.
Studded with a number of professionals, especially cricketers from Karnataka, Nagaland will also be aiming for a good show in the match against Uttar Pradesh too.
Prolific batter Sameer Rizvi will lead the 20-member Uttar Pradesh squad in the Under-23 State A One Day Trophy, beginning Sunday at Jaipur. Other members of the team are: Rituraj Sharma, Amaan, Adarsh Singh, Kavya Teotia, Siddharth Mishra, Sachin Singh, Arnav Baliyan, Chetanya Parashar (w-k), Manav Sandhu (w-k), Ali Zafar Mohsin, Ayush Chaudhary, Vijay Kumar, Shubham Mishra, Kartik Yadav, Abdul Rehman, Aksh Singhal, Ritik Vats, Aman Chauhan and Shubhankar Shukla....
