LUCKNOW, Jan. 1 -- Former champions Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday marched into the quarterfinals of the Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, scripting a facile 247 runs and an innings victory over Gujarat, at the JNN College of Engineering at Shimoga. Pacer Prithviraj Singh once again showed his might, bagging his second five-wicket haul in the match as Gujarat could score 65 in 22.5 in their second innings. After resuming at the overnight score of 45/6, Gujarat's remaining four wickets fell within 6.5 overs on Wednesday. In reply to Gujarat's first innings total of 103, Uttar Pradesh had declared their second innings at 415/6, and stretched their first innings lead to 312 on Tuesday itself before snapping six Gujarat wickets for just 45. A win for Uttar Pradesh was almost certain when the game begun on Wednesday, Overnight batter Divya Desai (16) couldn't add even a single run to his total before being caught by keeper Aalok Kumar off Prithviraj Singh, whereas other batter Ridham Patel could score one before being caught by Aalok Kumar off Rudra Sharma and this left scoreboard read 47/8. Prithviraj then trapped skipper Swapna Patel (1) before Kamran Ali got last man Het Chaudhary (4) run out on a direct throw. Dhruv Patel remained unbeaten on 13, which came off 19 balls. Prithviraj, who took 10 wickets in the match, finished with 5/15, whereas Rudra Sharma took 3/22. Aryan Tyagi bagged 1/11. Vidarbha also qualified for the quarterfinals, topping Elite Group A with 30 points, whereas Uttar Pradesh qualified for the knockout after finishing second with 22 points.
