PRAYAGRAJ, June 25 -- After two consecutive fouls on her second and third attempts, national record holder, Uttar Pradesh's Anushka Yadav, looked on her way out of the hammer throw event. However, she pushed hard with back-to-back 58-metre-plus throws before managing 60.46 metres to set up the only new meet record in the women's category of the 23rd Junior U20 Federation National Athletics Championship here on Tuesday. The old record of 57.09 metres stood in the name of Tanya Chaudhary. A native of Amipur Baleni village in Baghpat district, Yadav missed her own national record of 62.89 metre in hammer throw, at the Madan Mohan Malviya Stadium, and said that at least a new meet record on Tuesday has been a big motivation to her for the next year's U20 World Championship. "I am not eligible for junior nationals this year as I am just 17, but if I keep improving my throws in training further, I will be able to qualify for next year's U20 World championship," said Anushka. "Winning an international medal is my biggest dream as I want to win this for my father, who himself was a top-class hammer thrower in his life, but couldn't play the nationals," she added. Anuska first created a record at the National School Games held in Chandarpur, Maharashtra in 2019. This was followed by a meet record at the National Games held in Dehradun. Though she participated in the Asian Youth (Under-18) Athletics Championship in Dubai last year, she returned empty-handed. Her father, Sushil, looked happy over the performance of his daughter. "It's a proud moment for my family and we all want her to win a medal for India in future. I am the coach of my daughter as she has been training in our own ground, which is lying just out of my house," Sushil said. "I myself wanted to win a medal at least in the national championship, but I am happy that my daughter is trying to fulfill my dream," he added. Besides Anuska, Gujarat sprinter Murad Shriman set the other new meet record in the men's 400m hurdles, clocking 50.75 seconds.
