UP govt initiates safety audit of schools
LUCKNOW, July 29 -- The state government has initiated the exercise of conducting audits of safety mechanisms and facilities for children in schools. The initiative is a part of the missive from the ministry of education that issued a directive to all states and union territories mandating an audit of safety mechanisms.
Confirming the development, Lucknow DM Vishakh G said that he received instructions from the UP basic education department to carry out a safety survey of government school buildings in the district.
"The basic education department will carry out an independent survey. Besides, another survey will be done at the administration level," he said.
This move comes a day after a portion of a government school in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district collapsed on Friday, killing seven children and leaving 28 injured. The Education Ministry has also called for schools to ensure the structural integrity of buildings.
Teacher leader Vipin Bihari of UP Primary Teachers Association said, "If any classroom is in need of repair, it is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure that children don't sit there and the teacher should inform the department and village head. The education department and village head should act on such information immediately and start the work of repair etc."...
