UP go down fighting to TN in U23 State A Trophy final
LUCKNOW, Dec. 2 -- Former champions Uttar Pradesh's hopes of winning their second title went into vain as they lost to Tamil Nadu by 56 runs in the final of the Men's U23 State A Trophy, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday.
Uttar Pradesh could make 241 in 47.5 overs while chasing Tamil Nadu's 297. Uttar Pradesh lost their top three batters at 3/17 before being reduced to 7/115. All-rounder Prashant Veer waged the loan battle with 65-ball 87, which contained seven boundaries and five sixes. Kartik Yadav remained unbeaten on 29 (53b, 1x6).
Skipper Sameer Rizvi (41, 52b, 4x4 2x6) and Akshu Bajwa (21, 17b, 2x6) were the other key run getters. Slow bowler S Mohamed Ali took 5/46, whereas G Govinath claimed 2/44 for Tamil Nadu.
Earlier, SR Athish (53), S Mohamed Ali (57), Manav Parakh (57) and skipper Boopathi Vaishna Kumar (37) guided Tamil Nadu post a challenging total after being asked to bat first. Prashant Veer took 3/30, whereas Vijay Kumar and Akshu Bajwa shared four wickets between them.
Uttar Pradesh on Monday missed a knockout berth in the Women's Under-23 T20 Trophy as they lost to Assam by just seven runs in their last league match in the Elite Group C, at the Gurugram Cricket Ground at Sultanpur in Haryana.
Tamil Nadu (20 pts) and Karnataka (12 pts) made it to the knockouts, whereas Uttar Pradesh (12 points) finished third. It was a poor show by UP batters as they could make 100/8 while chasing Assam's 107/9.
Barring Tripti Singh (28), Muskan Malik (21) and Garima Yadav (18*), no other batter could touch the double-figure mark. In fact, bowlers did a fine job, not allowing Assam to post a huge total. Captain Jintimani Kalita struck the highest 40. For UP, Sandhya Chhetri took 3/11, whereas Khushi Tyagi and Archana Devi took two wickets each.
Uttar Pradesh batters failed to live up to the expectations and conceded a slender 17-run first innings lead to hosts Goa on the opening day of their four-day Elite Group D encounter of the Cooch Behar Trophy, at the Sanguem Cricket Ground on Monday.
Except Bhavi Sharma (61, 84b, 6x4, 1x6) and Anmol Moushran (34, 69b, 5x4), no other Uttar Pradesh batter could show any resistance before the Goa bowlers after being sent to bat first before being shot out for 125 in 42.4 overs. Spinner Mihir Kudalkar took 5/10 for Goa.
Goa finished the day at 142/3 in 39 overs in their first innings. Opener aaditya RK (48) and Shaantanu Nevagi (2*0 scored runs in the top order, whereas skipper Yash Kasvankar remained unbeaten at 52, which came off 56 balls with the help of six boundaries and a six....
