UP finish second runners-up in finswimming nationals
LUCKNOW, Dec. 29 -- Spirited Uttar Pradesh finished second runners-up in the 5th National Finswimming Championship at Mangalore with eight gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals. West Bengal and Karnataka stood first and second, respectively.
The medal winners of Uttar Pradesh were Amar Awasthi, Raj Yadav, Avinash Nishad, Ayush Chauhan, Markandey Yadav, Aditya Sahani, Abhishek Kumar, Gayatri, Ansh Pratap Singh, Abhishek Chauhan, Satyam Sahani and Kumkum Gupta. UP Finswimming Association's secretary, Narendra Singh Chauhan said that in the 2024 edition, Uttar Pradesh had an eighth-place finish.
"This time our swimmers did well and stood third overall and it's a great achievement in comparison to last edition's finish," he said.
As many as six players from hosts Lucknow stormed into the men's singles quarterfinals of the Uttar Pradesh State Tennis Tournament, notching up contrasting wins, at the Vijyant Khand Mini Stadium here on Sunday.
Favourite Sanidhya Dwivedi defeated Shubham Jeet Lal 6-2 in a pre-quarterfinal encounter. In other matches of the day, Varun Singh beat Pankaj Yadav 6-2, Shobhit Tandon beat Saurabh Singh 7-5, Om Yadav beat Rahul Prajapati 6-0, Yash Varma beat Ansh saxena 6-0, Abhishek Yadav beat Raj Kumar 6-1, Hanu Verma beat Anuj Kumar 6-2, Vansh Yadav beat Anirudh Kumar 6-1.
Men's singles +30 (semi-finals): Nirbhay Singh Soin bt Shobhit Tandon 6-3, Raj Kumar bt Deepak Yadav 6-3.
Men's singles +40 (semi-finals): Ankur Kapoor bt Hariom Singh 6-1, Sunil Kumar bt Ashwani Kumar 6-0.
