LUCKNOW, Oct. 8 -- One of the domestic giants, Uttar Pradesh, begin their campaign in the new season with its senior women's team playing in the T20 Elite Trophy against Kerala, at the ID Bindra Cricket Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday. Having lost in pre-quarterfinals to Himachal Pradesh last season, former runners-up Uttar Pradesh will be aiming for a podium finish this time under the leadership of a new captain Sonali Singh, an all-rounder from Lucknow, in place of Agra's Deepti Sharma, who is currently playing for India in the ongoing Women's World Cup. "For sure, we will miss Deepti at this important event, but still we have enough talent to challenge any opposition," said a team official on condition of anonymity on the eve of the event, where Uttar Pradesh will play seven matches against different oppositions. After playing against Kerala on Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh will be taking on J&K on Thursday and Bihar on Saturday. UP will also be playing against Baroda (October 13), against Mumbai (October 15) and against Vidarbha (October 17) before rounding off their league campaign with a match against Gujarat (October 19). "There have been a few major changes in the side from last year and we hope to do much better this time," said the official. Though Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association hasn't announced the team officially, the team includes 16 members and four stand byes and net bowlers too.
