UP Cong chief seeks action against cough syrup racket kingpin
LUCKNOW, Dec. 11 -- Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai has written to Union home minister Amit Shah, seeking strict action against the main accused in the codeine-based cough syrup racket busted in the state.
"Police investigation revealed that Amit Singh Tata had a key role in the cough syrup racket spread across the state, including PM's parliamentary constituency Varanasi. Though he had been arrested, the nexus grew over the years," the letter stated.
Rai added, "The UP DGP and chief secretary should be directed to examine administrative and other lapses over the years and identify the guilty. SIT should probe charges against Amit Singh Tata. All those involved in sale of codeine-based cough syrup, including wholesalers, retailers and others be punished."
The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief demanded that the bar council membership of the accused be revoked under a legal process. "Over the years, the cough syrup racket grew and it happened across Uttar Pradesh. There must be a probe to find out who all, other than those arrested, are involved in giving shelter to criminals," Rai said.
The UP Congress on Wednesday appointed Amit Kumar Rai as chairman of the party's teachers' cell and Azad Beg as chairman of doctors' cell. The appointments were made by party's state president Ajay Rai after approval of state in charge Avinash Pandey. Rai is a teacher at Shia PG College and Beg is from Mathura and active in politics....
