UP colts take first innings lead against Assam
LUCKNOW, Dec. 10 -- Half centuries by Bhavy Goyal and Kaartikaya Singh on Tuesday helped former champions Uttar Pradesh take a 121-run first innings lead against hosts Assam in their Elite Group D encounter of the Cooch Behar Trophy.
Skipper Goyal struck 79 in 178 balls with the help of 12 hits to the fence, whereas Singh scored 66 in 116 balls with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes as Uttar Pradesh scored 259 in their first innings lead in reply to Assam's first innings total of 138.
In the second innings Assam were 80/2 in 26.1 overs at the end of Day Two on Tuesday. Now, with this, Assam managed 41 runs lead in the second innings. Barunjoti Malakar remained unbeaten on 37 (66b, 5x4) after Assam lost the wickets of Tushar Rudra Borah (16) and Sharvin Das (26).
Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 3/102, Uttar Pradesh batters went on enjoying the placid turf of the Mangaldai Sports Association Stadium at Mangaldai with Goyal and Singh making full use of the opportunity. The two also added 102 runs for the fourth wicket. Besides these two, Daksh Chandel (28) and K Krishna (22) also made useful contributions.
A day after batters' fine show, Uttar Pradesh bowlers too showed their might in style, helping the side take cruise control over proceedings against Tripura on second day of their three-day Elite Group A encounter of the Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy at Shimoga on Tuesday.
Pacer Prithviraj led from the front to take 4/13, whereas Krishna Yadav (3/0) and Aarav Tyagi (2/41) supported him well to floor Tripura for 107 in their first innings after Uttar Pradesh batters posted 331. In the second innings, Tripura were 84/2 at the close of stumps on Tuesday while following-on.
In Tripura's second innings, Rajdeep Debnath struck the highest 44 in 67 balls with the help of eight hits to the fence. For UP, Prithviraj and Krishna shared two wickets between them. After conceding a huge 224-run first innings lead, Tripura still need 141 runs to let Uttar Pradesh bat again in their second innings....
