Lucknow, Aug. 4 -- To tackle malnutrition in children, Uttar Pradesh has launched a structured nutrition campaign aimed at encouraging families to adopt locally adaptable dietary practices, officials said. The emphasis is on using locally available foods combined with structured dietary plans and sensitising families to adopt nutrition-friendly behaviours. Officials in the Lucknow division have already received training on nutritional planning, including the use of a nutrition handbook. This handbook not only offers daily diet charts tailored for malnourished children but also includes simple recipes that families can prepare using everyday kitchen ingredients. "It's a family-centred health programme that deals with how we approach child well-being. We are not only focusing on food but also the behaviours around it," said an official from the state department of women and child development. The diet plan includes a structured daily meal schedule-morning snack, lunch, evening snack, and dinner-tailored to local food habits. It emphasises the use of easily accessible items such as porridge (daliya), seasonal vegetables, leafy greens, sprouted pulses, soybean, besan-based preparations, and ragi halwa. Milk and iron supplements are also incorporated, with iron syrup prescribed twice a week at age-appropriate doses. Divisional commissioner Roshan Jacob said, "The campaign also focuses on safe food handling, clean feeding practices, and the importance of hand hygiene. These behavioural aspects are considered critical in reducing infections and improving nutrient absorption in young children." Funding for the reprinting and wider distribution of the handbooks is being facilitated under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme....
