LUCKNOW, Oct. 26 -- Finally, Uttar Pradesh's spinners had a perfect time with the red ball on Saturday as Shivam Sharma, Vipraj Nigam and Prashant Veer helped hosts and former champions get all 10 wickets of opponents Odisha on the first day of their four-day Elite Group A Ranji Trophy encounter in Kanpur. Left-arm orthodox spinner Sharma led from the front, bagging 3/65, whereas leg spinner Nigam (2/39) and another orthodox left-arm spinner Veer (2/1) did their jobs nicely to get the rivals out for 243 in their first innings in 77.1 overs. In response, Uttar Pradesh were 17/0 in seven overs with Delhi men Abhishek Goswami (6) and Madhav Kaushik (9) batting at the crease at the draw of stumps. It wasn't a good start for the visitors when they chose to bat first, winning the toss as UP's speedster Shivam Mavi hurled back-to-back blows on Odisha, removing openers Swastik Samal and keeper-batter Aashirwad Swain in quick succession. First, he got Samal (4) and then Swain (4), who was caught by keeper Aryan Juyal in his first and fourth overs. Other seamer Kunal Tyagi too shook Odisha innings further, removing in-form batter and skipper Subhransu Senapati (3) by uprooting his middle stump with a perfect swinging one on the black soil strip of the Green Park Stadium. With the scoreboard reading 3/36 in 15 overs, it was expected a quick fall of further wickets of Odisha, but here came a twist as Sandeep Pattanaik and Govind Poddar then held the innings and stitched 92 runs for the fourth wicket. But things changed dramatically as soon as Shivam Sharma came into action as he forced Pattanaik to play into the hands of Karan Sharma, who scored 138-ball 53 with the help of eight hits to the fence, before trapping Poddar (64, 109b, 7x4) in his next over and Rajesh Dhuper (0) to leave Odisha struggling at 131/6. An 111-run eighth-wicket stand between Sambit S Baral and Rajesh Mohanty helped Odisha cross the 200-run mark, but Veer's perfect delivery outside the off stumps forced Mohanty (48, 57b, 5x4, 3x6) to edge a regulation catch to the slip fielder. Odisha's innings came to an end after Nigam took the wickets of Sunil Kumar Roul (2) and Badal (0) on consecutive deliveries before Veer bagged his second wicket in the form of Sumit Sharma (1). Baral remained unbeaten as he scored 59 in 90 balls with the help of seven hits to the fence and three sixes. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh brought a change in the side, inducting Prashant Veer in the place of Rinku Singh, who has left to play for Team India against Australia in the T20I series....
