UP bolsters temple restoration, tourism plan
LUCKNOW, July 17 -- In a strategic move that blends heritage preservation with economic development, the UP government is pushing ahead with large-scale restoration of ancient Shiva temples as a key pillar of its tourism-driven growth model, an official release stated.
Over the last eight years, 188 ancient temples have been revived across the state, but the government is far from done. With new projects planned in Agra, Firozabad, Gorakhpur and Gonda, the emphasis is clear: temple restoration isn't just about faith - it's about jobs, rural revival and putting Uttar Pradesh on the global tourism map.
This temple-led development model is being executed in collaboration with the UP tourism department, UP Projects Corporation Limited and the UP State Tourism Development Corporation. Officials say the plan is not only to restore neglected heritage sites but to convert them into tourism-ready destinations with upgraded infrastructure, sanitation, accessibility and local craft promotion.
In Agra's Fatehabad and Firozabad's Chakleshwar Mahadev and Samaur Baba temples, restoration work will focus on both preservation and tourist facilitation. Gorakhpur's Bhuleshwar, Khajni Mahadev and Jharkhandi Mahadev temples, as well as Gonda's Tirre Manorama temple, are also set for upgrades.
While these sites have deep religious significance, the state is positioning them as anchors of economic activity.
"Tourism isn't just a cultural mission-it's a development strategy. Each restored temple creates ripple effects-from homestays to handicraft sales, from guide services to transport jobs," a senior official from the tourism department said.
An official release of the state government stated the initiative extends beyond temple walls. In Mainpuri, the historic Ghanta Ghar will undergo beautification, while rural tourism is being actively promoted in eight villages across the Mirzapur division. A dedicated agency is being hired to develop a comprehensive rural tourism strategy, including home- stays, cultural trails and promotion of local cuisine and handicrafts.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has repeatedly stressed the role of tourism in achieving his government's vision of making Uttar Pradesh a trillion-dollar economy. With record footfalls in Ayodhya, Kashi and Prayagraj in 2024, the momentum is already visible.
The state has also announced plans to develop 11 key heritage sites and improve infrastructure at religious and cultural landmarks. These steps are expected to attract investors, boost domestic and international arrivals, and reinforce Uttar Pradesh's image as a heritage-rich, investment-ready state....
