UP athletics assn sacks secy for financial fraud
LUCKNOW, June 17 -- Months after an inquiry, the Uttar Pradesh Athletics Association (UPAA) has terminated the services of its secretary Devesh Dubey and decided to file an FIR against him for financial misconduct.
A decision to this effect was taken at UPAA's special general council meeting held in Meerut recently. President Ashutosh Bhalla said action against Dubey was taken on the basis of a report submitted by an inquiry committee.
"A four-member committee was formed in November last to probe the charges against Devesh Dubey. The panel of Neeraj Kumar, AK Gupta, S Shivanand Naik and Narendra Kumar submitted its report, recommending the measures against Dubey," Bhalla said on Monday.
"The motion was unanimously approved by the house during the special general council meeting, and we have a detailed report of the financial bungling through an audit report," said Bhalla. "Now, we have initiated the process of filing an FIR against Dubey," he added.
However, Dubey, when approached, refuted all allegations against him and said he still had the support of 42 out of 68 district units and would continue to act as the secretary of UPAA.
"All allegations against me are baseless and bogus. We have the support of maximum number of district units. We suspended Bhalla and Co. in December last," he said.
He acknowledged that the governing body in the county, the Athletics Federation of India, had not recognised his unit as official in Uttar Pradesh. "It's a conspiracy against me. I'm fighting for my survival and will go to court against UPAA's decision to terminate my services," Dubey added.
It is learnt that UPAA's special general council meeting was attended by top officials of AIFF, including vice-president (world athletics) Adille Sumariwala, president of South Asian Athletics Federation Lalit K Bhanot and AFI treasurer Stanley Jones.
The meeting discussed the development of athletics in Uttar Pradesh districts. Whereas Sumariwala delivered an insightful address on the development of sports at the grassroots level, Bhanot shared his vision for the 2036 Olympics in India and emphasised the need for more trained coaches and better infrastructure.
"We have special plans for the development of athletics in Uttar Pradesh," said Bhalla....
