UP assembly's image has improved: Mahana
LUCKNOW, Feb. 25 -- The negative perception of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly has changed to positive in the past four years, Satish Mahana, the speaker, said on Tuesday, following the conclusion of the first session of 2026, during which the state government tabled its annual budget.
Addressing the media, Mahana said in a democratic system, everyone should fulfill their role within their own boundaries. "There was a time when the public was sceptical and disappointed with the Assembly's proceedings, but today, the same House has become a centre for serious, meaningful, and result-oriented discussions."
He said members in the House both from the government side and opposition contribute equally to form an image of the House. His initiatives include a 24-hour session, opening of the Vidhan Bhavan for people to see and learn, and a session only for women MLAs.
The first session of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly in 2026, was conducted for a total 75 hours and 8 minutes including two hours and 23 minutes of adjournment. A total of 999 petitions and 694 notices were received. Mahana said that in the past, the image of legislators had often been negative, which he termed unfortunate.
"Good or bad people are everywhere, but institutions are most significant. Where we take our institutions is what matters. I believed someone had to take the initiative," Mahana said, adding that he has consistently worked to project a positive image of the legislature and highlight its constructive work....
