Unseasonal rain, storm hit vns; farmers fear crop loss
VARANASI, April 4 -- Light rain accompanied by strong winds lashed parts of Varanasi, Jaunpur and Ghazipur on Friday afternoon, raising concerns among farmers harvesting their wheat crops across the region.
The sky turned cloudy by noon, followed by a brief spell of storm and light showers in several areas of the three districts.
Sanjay Yadav, a resident of Tatarpur village in Ghazipur, said the unseasonal rain has caused significant damage to wheat crops that were ready for harvest. "Farmers across the region are worried about potential losses," he said.
Sagar Yadav, a farmer from Rajapur village in Varanasi district, said unseasonal rain is particularly harmful for ripened wheat and mustard crops. "Moisture in the grains can lead to fungal growth and reduce their quality, making them thinner and less marketable," he said.
District agriculture officer Sangam Singh advised farmers affected by unseasonal or cyclonic rainfall to report crop damage within 72 hours by calling the toll-free number 14447, provided their crops are insured under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
He added that if farmers face difficulty reporting via the toll-free number, they can submit a written complaint to the office of the district agriculture officer or the deputy director of agriculture to facilitate compensation through the crop insurance company as per norms.
According to the meteorological department, humidity levels were recorded at 47% in the morning and 79% in the evening on April 3. The maximum temperature was 37degC, while the minimum was 23degC....
