Unsafe food seized in Lucknow crackdown
Lucknow, Oct. 14 -- With Diwali and Bhai Dooj approaching, the Food Safety Department has started a strict drive in Lucknow to stop the sale of adulterated and unsafe food items often consumed during festivals.
On Monday, officials inspected many food shops, factories, and vendors across the city. Large quantities of food items were either seized or destroyed for being unsafe or stored in poor conditions.
One major action took place at Vansh Agro Industries in Ain Kanja Kheda, where 2,816 litres of mustard oil worth Rs.5.35 lakh were seized. In another case, at a Sonpapdi-making unit in Shivri, Kakori, around 2 quintals of low-quality sweets stored in dirty conditions were destroyed. These were worth about Rs.32,000.
At Bharat Milk Dairy & Sweets in Indira Nagar, 28 litres of milk, valued at Rs.1,680, were thrown away due to poor storage. Samples of khoya were also collected from two pickup vehicles in Malihabad, and more samples were taken from sweet and milk cake shops. In total, 11 samples were collected and sent to a lab for testing. Further action will be taken based on the results under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Alongside inspections, the department ran an awareness campaign using the Food Safety on Wheels (FSW) van. In Sector 17, Indira Nagar, the van tested 19 food items on the spot to teach locals about food safety and hygiene.
