LUCKNOW, Dec. 30 -- Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to stay the Delhi high court order that had suspended the life sentence of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case. Reacting to the development, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Abdul Hafiz Gandhi said, "The decision to stay the release of former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case is a significant and reassuring development in the pursuit of justice. By intervening and putting on hold the Delhi HC's order suspending the life sentence, the apex court has sent a clear message that in serious crimes, especially those involving sexual violence, judicial scrutiny must be careful, thorough, and sensitive to the rights of the survivor." Echoing similar views, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Rai said, "First of all, Kuldeep Singh Sengar got bail due to weak prosecution by the state government. I am truly grateful to Rahul Gandhi, who personally met with the victim and her family and assured them of all the necessary help. We want the victim should get justice. We welcome the decision by the apex court."HT...
