KANPUR, Sept. 23 -- Following violence during a religious procession in Shuklaganj on Sunday, Unnao police arrested five people on Monday and carried out flag marches in sensitive areas to maintain law and order. Officials said seven to eight individuals, including police personnel, were injured in stone-pelting and subsequent lathicharge. Additional superintendent of police Akhilesh Kumar confirmed the procession took place without permission under prohibitory orders and warned that action would be taken against those obstructing government work. The unrest began when a group of youths organised a procession without approval. Police detained three participants, prompting a mob to attack the Gangaghat police station with stones. In the clash, a policeman's uniform was torn and his insignia taken, after which the police responded with baton charges. By late Sunday, six people were already in custody. On Monday, police held peace committee meetings with community leaders and clerics to restore calm. City Qazi Nisar Ahmad Misbahi urged restraint in a video message, saying, "Raising slogans is not banned, but taking out processions without permission is not acceptable. Youths must not act in anger or indulge in unlawful activities."...
