Universities key to shelter home kids' rehabilitation, says CSJMU VC
Lucknow, Sept. 8 -- Under the aegis of the High Court Juvenile Justice Committee, in collaboration with the Judicial Training and Research Institute (JTRI), Lucknow, and UNICEF, a state-level stakeholders' consultation meeting was held at JTRI, Lucknow.
On the occasion, Prof Vinay Pathak, Vice Chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur, gave a presentation on "Role of University for Shelter Home Children: From Punitive to Correctional Education and Rehabilitation towards Holistic Development."
Prof Vinay Pathak stressed the need to move beyond punitive approaches and adopt corrective, education-centric methods.
He said universities, with their multidisciplinary expertise, can support the rehabilitation and empowerment of shelter home girls through innovative pedagogy, trauma-informed education, counselling, behaviour modification, skill development, livelihood pathways, and life skills training.
He highlighted the contribution of departments such as psychology, social work, education, agriculture, horticulture, yoga, hotel management, fine arts, music, and fashion designing in areas like counselling, bridge courses, vocational training, health, nutrition, and livelihood development.
Prof Pathak also informed the attendees that volunteer students of the university are already working effectively with children in Shelter Homes through a "Youth-to-Youth Contact" initiative.
