Dehradun, July 29 -- A first information report (FIR) was registered against unidentified people for allegedly spreading rumours of an electric current that allegedly caused a deadly stampede on the stairway to the Mata Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar on Sunday morning. The FIR was registered at Kotwali police station on Sunday under 106 (Causing death by negligence), 125 (a) (act endangering life or personal safety of others where hurt is caused), 125(b) (act endangering life or personal safety of others where grievous hurt is caused), 353 (3) (Statements conducing to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on the complaint of sub inspector Sanjeet Singh. Singh in his complaint said, "When I was present at Har-Ki-Pauri outpost, constable Sandeep Kapoor posted on duty at Mata Mansa Devi Temple informed me that the crowd on the stairway to the temple has become uncontrollable and a stampede like situation is arising. It can cause any untoward situation. I along with two constables immediately rushed to the spot. Upon reaching there using the trolley, we found an atmosphere of chaos. Some people were lying injured and some unconscious. The police personnel stationed there informed us that some injured have already been rushed for treatment through the trolley." Singh further added that "Upon inquiring the locals and devotees about the stampede, we came to know that at around 8.40 am some unknown people spread rumours of electric current that caused the stampede " Kotwali station house officer (SHO) Ritesh Shah said, "We have registered the FIR and our investigation into the matter has been started." He said they are trying to identify those who spread the rumours. Eight people, including a 12-year-old boy, were killed and 30 others injured in a stampede on a narrow stairway leading to the hilltop temple in Haridwar on Sunday morning. Video clips of the stampede spot showed a large crowd pressed against each other in the choked 1.5 km passage leading to the temple.
