Undertrial escapes Kanpur jail via 'black spot', 4 suspended
KANPUR, Aug. 11 -- An inquiry into the escape of undertrial prisoner Asaruddin from Kanpur district jail has revealed that he scaled a 22-foot wall, hid on the roof of the ration store, and slipped out through a riverfront "black spot" without CCTV coverage. Officials suspect he jumped into the Ganga shortly after midnight on Friday.
The prisons department has suspended jailor Manish Kumar, deputy jailor Ranjit Yadav, and head warders Dilshad Khan and Naveen Kumar Mishra for lapses. DIG (prisons) Pradeep Gupta has been tasked with submitting a report within a week.
CCTV footage shows Asaruddin hiding until after the evening headcount, using a container to climb the inner wall, and moving towards the jailor's office roof before reaching the Ganga-facing perimeter.
Lodged since January for allegedly murdering his friend over suspicions of an affair with his wife, the Assam native's escape is the first such case in the prison's history.
Police commissioner Akhil Kumar has deployed crime branch and local police to track him. His details have been circulated, and searches are ongoing along the Ganga. The DIG's report is expected to recommend stronger security for the vulnerable riverfront section....
