Haldwani, Nov. 26 -- One worker was killed and two others sustained injuries after an under-construction wall collapsed in Dinapani area of Almora district on Tuesday, officials said. Almora SDM Sanjay Kumar said the wall was being built behind a house when the incident took place. The workers were engaged in masonry work when the structure above them suddenly loosened and collapsed, bringing down a mass of debris along with a footpath. Three workers who were working close to the wall were buried under the rubble, while three others standing at a distance escaped unhurt, he said. The workers who managed to escape alerted nearby villagers, who then informed the police. Based on information from locals, teams from the state disaster response force (SDRF) and the local police rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation, removing heavy debris manually and with equipment to reach the trapped labourers. By the time rescuers pulled them out, one of the workers had succumbed to injuries. The deceased was identified as Anand Ram (50), son of Mohan Ram and a resident of Kotuda village. The injured were identified as Gopal Ram (45), son of Bachi Ram, and Kuldeep Singh (38), son of Mohan Singh Mehta. The injured were taken to Base Hospital, Almora, where they are undergoing treatment and remain under observation, hospital officials said. SDM Kumar said preliminary observations suggest the collapse may have occurred due to soil instability behind the house, though the exact cause will be determined after an investigation....
