LUCKNOW, Dec. 27 -- Issues like implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC), formation of a separate commission, similar to the Sachar Committee, to assess the socio-economic condition of Shia Muslims across the country and reservation for them in jobs are some of the major issues that will figure during the national convention of All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB) to be held in Lucknow on Sunday (December 28). Addressing a press conference here on Friday, AISPLB general secretary Maulana Yasoob Abbas said, "Ulema, preachers, intellectuals and responsible members of the community from across the country will participate in the convention." AISPLB president Maulana Syed Saem Mehdi was also present at the press conference. "Demand for the reconstruction of the shrines at Jannat-ul-Baqi in Medina, Saudi Arabia along with demand for the formation of a separate commission, similar to the Sachar Committee, to study the condition of Shia Muslims will also be raised," Abbas said. "Demand for providing Shia Muslims a share in government benefits in proportion to their population will be raised along with a demand for reservation in jobs for Shia Muslims based on their economic backwardness," he added. Discussion on the lack of representation of the 80 million (8 crore) Shia Muslims in the country in Parliament and state legislative assemblies will also take place during the convention. On the other hand, proposals will be given for social reforms, particularly regarding excessive expenditure on weddings and funerals along with other key issues, he said. Maulana Abbas further said consideration of legal measures to prevent hate speeches, mob lynching besides a discussion on the corruption prevalent in Waqf boards will also take place. The AISPLB annual convention will also see a discussion on consideration of demands to impose any kind of ban on the hijab.
