U.P. women to get 1% stamp duty relief on property registration
Lucknow, May 10 -- Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday directed extension of 1% stamp duty discount for women on property registration up to Rs 1 crore. Currently, this discount is available for women for property registrations up to Rs 10 lakh.
The chief minister made the announcement during a review meeting of the stamp and registration department here. The move is expected to significantly enhance women's economic empowerment while making property transactions more affordable.
He also directed officials to ensure uniformity in circle rate determination, especially in areas with similar conditions.
Factors such as development, urbanisation and basic infrastructure progress should be considered while setting circle rates to ensure that the public benefits directly, he said. Additionally, he underscored the importance of verifying documents and land ownership before registration to minimise disputes.
Adityanath further directed officials to streamline the registration process by maximizing the use of technology, aiming to save time and resources.
The meeting also highlighted the department's financial achievements, with stamp duty revenue in Uttar Pradesh tripling over the past eight years-from Rs 11,000 crore in 2016-17 to over Rs 30,000 crore in 2024-25. The department recorded an 11.67% year-on-year increase in revenue for 2024-25.
Circle rates have already been revised in 45 districts, and the process is ongoing in the remaining 30.
The chief minister announced a cap of Rs 5,000 on fees for dividing and registering ancestral property among family members, applicable to property divisions involving a living person and their three preceding generations. The move aims to reduce legal friction within families and provide a more affordable resolution to inheritance disputes.
