U.P. power staff warns of stir if privatisation pushed secretly
Lucknow, Oct. 26 -- The Vidyut Karmachari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti, on Saturday warned that if the government or the Power Corporation moved ahead with privatisation of power distribution through secret tenders, electricity employees across the state would launch a jail bharo stir, holding the management solely responsible for any consequences.
Marking the 332nd day of their ongoing agitation against privatisation, employees, engineers and contractual staff staged protests in all districts, resolving to intensify their movement. Central office-bearers of the committee and the Abhiyanta Sangh alleged that the tender process for the privatisation of Purvanchal and Dakshinanchal Discoms was being kept confidential. "The plan involved splitting the two corporations into five parts and inviting separate bids, with companies paying Rs 5 lakh for access to tender links and signing an undertaking not to disclose RFP documents," Sangh convenor Shailendra Dubey claimed. He termed this secrecy "a sign of corruption" and said such an opaque process under a government claiming zero tolerance for corruption was unprecedented....
