VARANASI, July 11 -- The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of U.P, Navdeep Rinwa, on Thursday stressed the importance of having accurate and updated voter lists. He directed district magistrates to make sure that no voter's name appears in the list at more than one place. He was speaking at a one-day training programme for District Election Officers (DEOs) from 24 districts, held in Varanasi. Rinwa chaired the meeting, which was attended by district magistrates from regions including Prayagraj, Azamgarh, Ayodhya, and Varanasi. Rinwa said the training was organised to help officers prepare for the upcoming elections. He discussed errors in the voter list, the responsibilities of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), and key provisions of the constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1950. He explained that voter lists are prepared using the 'ERO Net' database and that the Aadhaar QR scanner is used to identify invalid Aadhaar numbers. He stressed removing the names of deceased or shifted voters, regularly adding new eligible voters, and ensuring every person is registered at only one place. To make voting more accessible, he also gave instructions to improve polling station facilities - including drinking water, separate toilets, ramps for disabled voters, lighting, and clear signage. The use of the BLO App and the voter service portal was also discussed to help voters. Additionally, officials are considering increasing the number of polling stations so that each one serves no more than 1,200 voters, which will help avoid long queues.
