Meerut, July 14 -- Joginavada, a locality in Bareilly that witnessed communal clashes two years ago during the Kanwar Yatra, has emerged as a shining beacon of brotherhood and coexistence. After the Friday prayers at the Shahnuri Mosque, a group of about 150 kanwariyas led by one Shivnandan Sharma marched through the area chanting 'Bol Bam' and "Har Har Mahadev". It was greeted with warmth. Outside the mosque, nearly 50 members of the Muslim community gathered to welcome the pilgrims. They showered flowers and adorned the kanwariyas with garlands, and joined hands in celebrating the spirit of togetherness. The greetings continued on Saturday and Sunday. Two years ago, it was near the mosque where a stone-pelting incident took place between people of two communities. Police had resorted to lathi-charge and even aerial firing to disperse the mob. Prabhakar Chaudhary, who was the senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Bareilly at the time, ordered action when rioters openly displayed firearms. At the heart of past tensions was a peepal tree branch that hung over a narrow stretch of a road. For over three decades, Muslims had been digging the road during Muharram to allow a Tazia to pass, while the Hindu community resisted cutting the branch due to religious sentiments. This led to repeated confrontations. Six months ago, the local administration intervened and had the branch removed. Since then, the atmosphere in the area began changing. Last week, during a Muharram procession, Hindu residents of Maurya Gali had welcomed the Tazia with flower showers. This week, Muslims reciprocated the sentiment during the Kanwar Yatra.
