Two women cops held on bribery charge
VARANASI, Oct. 18 -- A team of Anti-corruption Organisation on Friday arrested a sub-inspector deployed as in-charge of women police station in Varanasi after being caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.
According to ACO sources, Meraj, a resident of Jalalpur in the Civil Lines area of Bhadohi district, had filed a complaint that his younger brother was married in the Baragaon police station area. The couple had been feuding since the marriage. The younger brother's wife filed a complaint at the women's police station, Varanasi alleging that her in-laws and husband were asking for dowry. Based on the complaint, a case against 14 people for demanding dowry was registered.
Meraj alleged that the Women Police Station in-charge Sumitra Devi demanded a total of Rs.42,000 from him (Meraj) to remove the names of the accused from the case. Meraj had already paid Rs 10,000.
On Friday, the Anti-Corruption team, with Meraj's assistance, set a trap. The ACO team, along with the victim, arrived at the women police station. Meraj handed over the chemical-coated notes to the woman in-charge and constable. As soon as Sumitra Devi and the woman constable accompanying her, Archana, touched the money, the Anti-Corruption Team took immediate action and detained both of them.
The ACO team left for the Cantt police station with the woman police station in-charge and the woman constable.
