Meerut, July 26 -- A court here on Friday sentenced two men to rigorous life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a man 11 years ago. Officials said Santosh Kumar was strangled to death by Rinku alias Akash and his associate Sarvjeet, who also attempted to destroy evidence by pouring acid on the body and setting it ablaze. The court of additional district and sessions judge Pankaj Kumar Srivastava pronounced the verdict on Friday. According to additional district government counsel (ADGC) Shripal Verma, the incident came to light when Ramasare of Dhakia Parvezpur village in this district reported his son Santosh missing. As per his testimony on October 23, 2014, Ramasare last saw his son and Rinku in Keruganj. However, Santosh never came back home. Convinced that Rinku was involved in his son's disappearance, Ramasare filed a police complaint on October 29, 2014. The investigation revealed that Rinku and Sarvjeet had lured Santosh away, strangled him to death, and then tried to destroy his body by pouring acid over it and setting it on fire. Only bones were recovered from the crime scene. Further probe revealed the motive behind the murder: Santosh had allegedly misbehaved with one of Rinku's female friends. Seeking revenge, Rinku plotted the murder with Sarvjeet, the ADGC said. "During the court proceedings, testimonies from witnesses and forensic evidence proved crucial in establishing the guilt of the accused. It also emerged that Sarvjeet was already serving a life sentence for another murder conviction," the ADGC said.
